Returning to work after maternity: How to write to your employer

Here’s our simple template suggestion of how to write officially to your employer on your intentions to return to your job when your maternity ends

Writing a return from maternity leave letter

Here’s how to write an official letter to your company about your intention to return after your maternity leave

Mum writing back to work letter

In advance of returning from your maternity leave you may be required to write a return from maternity leave letter, not sure how to approach it?

If you’ve never written one before, and you’re still adjusting to life as a mum and not getting quite the sleep you’re used to, this could feel a difficult task. So we’ve put together some key points to include in a standard template to help get you started.

1. State your intention

First say that you would like to return/or not to your job.

2. Show enthusiasm

Do take the opportunity to explain why you're looking forward to returning to work. Mention all the positive things you're looking forward to on your return.

3. Mention early any special requests you have

If you're returning to the same role, state your intent to resume your position. Even if you provided it in writing before you left, remind your employer of when your maternity leave began and when it's scheduled to end. Also advise them the date you're returning or if you've had change of heart and want to come back earlier.

4. Can I email my letter?

Yes you can email it to your HR director or your immediate supervisor with the subject line "xxxx’s Return From Maternity Leave Email".
Indicate when you think you’d like to come back to work and raise anything else you’d like to address.

If you are looking to discuss a change in hours to part-time or a flexible working option, you could mention this in your return to work letter. Your letter would also be great opportunity to state any agreed upon changes to your work schedule as well.
