Let the music play and inspire baby names for boys and girls
Where better to look for inspiration for your baby’s name than from your favourite feel good music
If music be the food of love, play on…
Music has always been an inspiration for baby names. Without iconic bands like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, the names Lennon, Jude, Stone, and Jagger would probably never have been invented. David Bowie and Prince were inspirations even before their untimely deaths in 2016.
Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale named their third son Apollo Bowie Flynn in 2014 and Take That star Howard Donald named his newborn after the Let’s Dance singer died in January. Prince at one time had sole dominion over this name, but then Michael Jackson chose it for not one but two of his sons. Jackson, itself, has become a popular choice before and after the King of Pop died in 2009.
Actress Charlize Theron chose it for her son in 2011.
It’s not just musical geniuses who have inspired our choices. Song names have also played a part through the years. Think of Layla (Clapton), Lola (The Kinks), Lucille (Kenny Rogers), Eleanor (The Beatles), Rosie (Neil Diamond).
The past 10-15 years have seen jumps in the popularity of names Rhianna, Beyonce, Taylor, Miley and Shakira as a new generation of parents opt to name their offspring after their favourite artists. Aalyiyah became popular after the singer’s untimely death in 2001 and Nirvana (meaning place of great bliss) could be inspired from fans of the late Kurt Cobain.
Musical terms have also provided inspiration for names including Allegra, Cadence, Harmony and Hymn for girls, and Allegro, Alto and Forte for boys. Even Abba is a scholar name in Israel.
