Gary.
It’s a name we associate with that episode of Only Fools and Horses and maybe our dads or our dad’s mates.
And it seems many of us agree. According to a US baby name site, Gary, which means ‘spear’ has seen a decline over recent decades and is in danger of being extinct!
The latest is a huge contrast from 1951 where it was the 10th most chosen name in the US for three consecutive years. In fact there were less than 450 boys in the US named Gary in 2013 compared to around 38,000 in the early 1950s.
Over on British soil there were only 28 UK boys named Gary in 2013 compared to 235 in 1996.
The extinction may come as a shock to some famous Garys including Mr Barlow, Mr Neville and of course Mr Lineker.
Now we all know that some traditional baby names are making their way back in, but there are some that, like Gary, just haven’t stood the test of time.
Here’s some that we think may follow this boy’s name down the path of extinction.
