Of all the clothes you buy during pregnancy, a pair of maternity jeans is probably the most essential. They’ll form the backbone of your maternity wardrobe, and you’ll be able to wear them with pretty much everything, for every type of occasion, from doing the weekly shop to a night on the town. If you choose a plain, dark shade they could even be suitable for work, too.
What to look for
Your first decision is to choose between under or over bump jeans. Under bump styles have an elastic or ribbed waist that helps them to sit snugly under your tummy and look and feel more like your everyday pair of jeans. Over bump jeans have a very wide fabric panel that’s pulled up over your bump and sits just under your bust line. Many people initially prefer an under bump style, but as your tummy grows, you might appreciate the better support the wider band gives.
As with regular jeans, you’ll have the choice of styles such as bootcut, boyfriend and skinny with different washes and finishes.
Need to know
Buy jeans in your usual pre-pregnancy size as maternity jeans are designed for your body to grow, so there’s no need to size up. Price-wise you can pay anything from £20-£200, but remember that you could be wearing them for only six months tops so think about value for money, too.
